Iguanodon lived between 126-122 million years ago, during the Early Cretaceous period.
Its thumbs consisted of large conical spikes that may have may have been used for foraging or defense against predators or rivals. Its elongated and flexible little fingers may have been used to manipulate plant material. It is unknown what sort of plants Iguanodon would have eaten, but it would have been able to browse from trees as high as 5m 16ft). Its name comes from its teeth, which are similar to a modern Green Iguana, and show that Iguanodon was a herbivore. It was a large, bulky animal - around 10m (33ft) or more in length and weighing around 3.08 tonnes (3.4 tons) - that could walk on its hind legs as well as on all fours.
